Another Capital Caper In The Books!

Another Capital Caper is in the books and what a fun weekend we had!! It all started out with our Intro to West Coast Swing with the dance called “You’re Something Special To Me”. It was a good beginning dance as it has figures that repeat often which is what we need—and nice music as well! On Friday evening, we learned the phase 4 foxtrot, “Kiss To Build A Dream On” with once again, beautiful music and good reinforcements of figures. On Saturday morning, the vastly popular dance right now, “Right Here Waiting For You” was taught. It is a phase 5 rumba and this dance was a real crowd pleaser and beautiful to dance to. We ended off our teaching sessions on Saturday afternoon with a phase 4 mambo called “One More Tequila” which will be a very nice addition to any club’s mambo dance collection! Steve and Irene did a fabulous job on all the teaches and we had many positive responses regarding the dances taught. In between the Saturday morning and afternoon dance teaches we had a delicious lunch comprised of sandwiches, cheese, veggie and fruit platters. To satisfy our sweet tooth we also had some scrumptious squares, tarts and cookies of various types at our lunch meal and also provided with coffee breaks! Ian and Ann were scheduled to put out the lunch spread but due to unforeseen circumstances, Ian could not attend. Ann was good enough to come and help out irregardless and Brian and Ann stepped in to not only look after coffee for the weekend, but also for the lunch meal. Thank you Brian and Ann for your many contributions to Capital Carousels cause!
Our final night dance on Saturday night was a nice mix of dances and also dance demos and dance thru of the teaches. As Halloween was just around the corner, our Montreal dancers decided to come dressed for the occasion. Crazy bunch they were and a nice backdrop to our Halloween decorations. I will be posting pictures of Capital Caper in the near future, so be on the lookout!
Once again, we had members of our own Capital Carousels club in attendance, but also our loyal Capital Caper attendees from Montreal and also the southern Ontario region! We appreciate everyone’s support of Capital Caper and it would not have come together had it not been for the people in the picture. Gavin, for many years has been managing the registrations and money for the Capers and doing a fabulous job. Thank you Gavin! Pat has not only created and ran our newest Caper-Summer Caper, but has taken over the reigns in running our Capital Caper. Great job all around Pat not only your input of teaching selections and creating the dance program, but also keeping the strings tied around everything else involved. Thanks so much for your hard work. We couldn’t really do this weekend if it were not for Steve and Irene Bradt! We treasure having them with us to increase our dancing knowledge, cueing a wonderful night dance, but also just their longstanding friendship with this dance event. Thank you! Also a big thank you to Ian and Ann who although, not pictured, were involved in our Saturday lunch. We wish Ian a quick recovery and thank Ann for coming out to assist in any case. Again, a big thank you to Brian and Ann for running the weekend refreshments and also stepping in to help out with Saturday’s lunch! Also a big thank you to all of our Capital Carousel dancers and also our visitors to helping out with setup and takedown of tables and chairs and to Pat and Jill for our Halloween decorations.
Another fun year has gone by for Capital Caper and here’s looking forward to seeing you next year!

Capital Caper Coming Up!

Just 2 more weekends until Capital Caper! Steve and Irene Bradt will be returning to our Nation’s Capital with an interesting mix of dance rhythms to teach this year! We will be starting on Friday afternoon with an Intro to West Coast Swing! This will be an excellent opportunity to learn a new rhythm where everyone in our club is basically on the same playing field! No experience necessary for this session. We hope you will join us. In the evening, there will be a lovely phase 4 foxtrot presented which we think all will enjoy. On Saturday morning, a very popular phase 5 rumba will be taught which will be a wonderful addition to our dance experience. Based on what many round dancers worldwide are saying, we think you will like this one! On Saturday afternoon, Steve and Irene will be finishing off the teaching adding a phase 4 mambo! As we have a very limited amount of mambos in our dance portfolio, this will definitely be a welcome dance to our mambo selection! Capital Caper, as always, will be topped off with a night dance on Saturday night where Steve will be cueing all evening. Remember, not only does this weekend provide us with new dances to learn and a night of dancing on Saturday night, it also provides us a wonderful weekend to reacquaint ourselves with friends who visit us from outside our area. We also are treated to a wonderful lunch on Saturday where we get a chance to sit down and catch up on things.
Both Summer Caper and Capital Caper are Capital Carousels chance to provide enhanced learning experiences not only to our own dancers, but also to those who visit us from other areas. To host these events requires many helping hands and support from dancers to continue. If you have already registered, thank you for your support. If you have not, it is not too late. Pat Black will be accepting registrations at our club dances for the next couple of weeks. Please consider registering and helping us to continue to offer these dances weekends for the years to come. Thank you!

Summer Caper Recap

Another Summer Caper has come and gone. Today we have a guest blog contributor with our own Pat Black giving us all the details! Without further adieu, here is Pat!!

This past weekend we hosted our 2nd Summer Caper, and what a good time was had by all. Friday night Barbara and Wayne Blackford treated us to a terrific 3+2 tango by Mark and Pam Prow called Temptation. Saturday morning they introduced us to their new 5+2 bolero called The Day You Love Me and gave a 45 minute clinic on the proper way to do bolero which some felt extremely helpful. The afternoon was fun as jive always is, teaching us their new 4+1 jive Cat Daddy which had some neat figures that certainly would be a bit of a challenge for anyone with 2 left feet syndrome. The lunch on Saturday was terrific as always, Jenny & Ziggy this year with Ian and Ann’s help out did themselves, thank you all for a job well done.

Thanks to everyone who came out to support our club and those who helped with the set up and tear down and anything else that made this Capital Caper a success.

Pat Black
Program Director

Summer Caper Weekend Is Almost Here!

Believe it or not, the end of summer is almost upon us. With that, Summer Caper Weekend must be just around the corner. Yes, on August 26+27, Wayne and Barbara Blackford will be back with another round of teaches that will definitely add some more sways to our dance moves! Along with some summer night dancing, it’ll be a great way to “round” out our summer of dancing. Space is still available for Summer Caper Weekend so if you are looking for something big to finish off your summer of 2016, come and dance with us. If you have not yet registered, please be sure to do so now. Our website here has a special section devoted to Summer Caper and is found under the Special Events link at the top of the page. The flyer is available for download and local hotel information is also included if so needed. Come on out, see some old friends and make some new ones! Learn some new dances and figures from two of the best in the business! Trip the “light fantastic” with a fun night dance program on both Friday and Saturday night! Enjoy lunch and break time snacks as part of your registration! Come and support your club’s dance event and we’ll see you at Summer Caper!

Just Around The Corner

Yes, we have a few events which are just around the corner indeed! Coming up first will occur a week from this coming Monday in fact-Monday, April 11! Our 4-6 Interest Group learning some popular international dances being done worldwide through the Hurd’s Instructional Library! We will be learning a dance via video instruction with George and Pam Hurd. This will be shown via a large wall mounted TV in a room large enough for dancing. We will start with some warmup rounds and then run the video, starting and stopping it as we go to practice. The Hurd’s will be demonstrating the entire dance and walking us through the dance in sections as well with good demonstration of the figures. We will also have a break time and some dancing to finish off the program. We will be starting with a 4+2 Rumba which I think you will enjoy. It is a new concept for us, but we will not know how it will work if we don’t try it out! If you feel fairly comfortable dancing at our Wednesday club this might be something you might like to try out! We hope to see you there. Check out our Coming Events section on our website here for the flyer.
Come the end of April, Swing Into Spring will be on the agenda in Prescott! Square and round dancing will be featured with separate halls for both. David Goss and Ulla Figwer will be back with some more excellent dances to teach us! Get your registration in and specify your dance levels you would prefer. All that’ll be left is the dancing! Check out our Coming Events section for the registration form if you still need it!
Our Spring Session is just 4 weeks in length this spring. It will run from the week of Apr 13+14 to May 4+5. On May 11+12 we have a special treat with JL and Linda Pelton, cuer/instructor couple from Dallas, Texas coming to spend a couple of days with us at our clubs. They will be teaching a dance on both days and both of these dances will be able to danced at both clubs. We encourage our dancers to come out to both days, meet JL and Linda and learn some new dances! We will also be having a potluck lunch on Thursday immediately after our dance day at Parkdale. Please bring your favourite potluck dish and let’s enjoy a lovely lunch together! Best news is, although this is not a part of our regular session, it is actually cheaper! We ask for $5 per person for both days! What’s not to like!
And lastly, our 2015-2016 Dance Season closes on Wednesday, May 18 with our final dance of the season-open to both our Wednesday and Thursday club members. All dancing and a short meeting in between. More talk of this dance to come!
As you can see, we have lots still to come in our season. Please check the front stage area for flyers of upcoming events. We have lots that will be happening after our dance season ends even. Keep your dance shoes handy! You will be needing them!

Dancing-Go Figure!

Valentine’s Day is but a sweet memory and it is back to business at Capital Carousels. We have been learning plenty of dances these past few years. For a change of pace, we are in the midst of looking at specific figures and all requested from the club members. We had spent about 3 weeks on foxtrot and this past week we started on some rumba figures! It is always a good thing to take a step back every once in awhile and revisit how some of these figures are done. Not only does it take some of the hiccoughs out of some dances, but we can actually dance better as a result. It is not a see one-do one-teach one activity. It takes practice and that is what these series of figures clinics is all about!
Just a reminder to you about a big event happening right here at Capital Carousels May 11 and 12th! JL and Linda Pelton, Round Dance Cuer and Instructors from Dallas, Texas will be with us to give us the benefit of their expertise with 2 teaches-one on each day! These teaches may be slightly longer than our typical format, but we will have warmup rounds and dances after the teach as time permits by our own cuer, Donna. Our guests are on vacation after all, and we would like to also give them an opportunity to dance and socialize and make some new friends “north of the border”. After the dance session is over on Thursday, May 12, we will all have a chance to enjoy a delicious potluck lunch. We all enjoy food, and we know we have fabulous cooks in our midst at Capital Carousels, so get your favourite recipe and let’s all enjoy a wonderful lunch and what I suspect will be a great way to wind up our special event with JL and Linda. This is a special event and will not be a part of our regular spring session. However, as a thank you to all of our Capital Carousel club members for your continued loyalty and support, the price will be just $5/person or $10/couple and that includes BOTH days. If you choose to attend just one day, the price remains the same so make the most of it and plan to attend both days. There will be a phase 3 and a phase 4 dance taught during the Pelton’s visit so definitely something for both our Wednesday and Thursday groups. If you would like a flyer, there is one posted in our Coming Events page, which you will be able to download as you wish. I will also have some copies at our regular dance sessions.
Beyond this event, there are plenty of dances listed on our Coming Events page. Lots of dances to put all of these figures clinics to good use. Practice those figures. Your dancing will be better for it!

Special Event This Spring!

Original Post by Donna Stewart January/25/2016 07:33 PM

Our 2015-2016 dance season will finish on a real high note this year! We are thrilled to announce that JL and Linda Pelton, round dance cuer/instructors and choreographers from Dallas, Texas will be with us, May 11 and 12!! With this special event, JL and Linda will be teaching two dances (one on Wednesday night and one on Thursday morning) which will be open for all of our Capital Carousel dancers on both days. This week, not included in our regular spring session fee, will be offered at a VERY special price of $5/person or $10/couple which will include BOTH DAYS! If you choose to attend just one day, it will be the same cost. Excellent value for an amazing experience! You won’t want to miss out on this great opportunity!
JL and Linda’s story starts when they met at a square dance convention in 2004. They continued to dance together at both square and round dance events, even having a square and round dance reception at their wedding in 2007! JL began cueing in 2008 and their lives continue to grow through their love of round dancing! You can read their full story through this biography link.
We are very pleased that the Peltons’ will be combining some sightseeing and some dance experiences at Capital Carousels while they are here! We will keep you posted through our blog here and our club day announcements for details as they are released. Looking forward to your visit JL and Linda!

UPDATE!!
Thursday, May 12 will be our last day of teaches this season. Typically on our last dance day on Thursday, we have a luncheon afterward. Expecting a higher attendance this last day from both our Wednesday and Thursday dancers, we will be having a potluck at the church immediately following our dance day! What’s not to like? We don’t have far to travel for lunch and we get to sample many excellent dishes brought by our group members. We also get this special time together as a club and with our special guests, JL and Linda. This last week of dancing this season just gets better and better! Stay tuned!

Our Winter Session Has Started

Our holiday break has now ended and we are thrilled to be moving on to our new winter dance session! By the looks on everyone’s faces both Wednesday evening and Thursday morning, it seems that all of our members at Capital Carousels are glad to be back too. Thursday morning, we had a bit of snow squall on the way in to Parkdale and were glad to the many who made the trek in. We understand those who could not make it given the circumstances.
There was no rest for our dancers though as Pat and John got us right back into the learning curve with foxtrot teaches on both days. On Wednesday night, we started reviewing, “It’s Always New To Me” phase 4 foxtrot by David Goss and Ulla Figwer. Thursday morning we started the classic phase 4 foxtrot, “Witchcraft” by Ken and Irene Slater. Both definitely good dances in their own rights. You will find the cuesheets for both of these dances in our set of links under “Dance Season”.
As you get back into the swing of things on the dance floor, you may be interested in attending a local round dance in our area. You will have that opportunity on Feb 6 as EOSARDA holds their annual Frosty Fling. This dance, set up to encourage beginner dancers to be out and about to other venues apart from their own clubs features both a square and round dance hall. Tickets can be purchased ahead of time right at our club! You can see Ziggy if you would like to purchase and they will be $8/person in advance or $10/person at the door.
It might be cold (and getting colder) outside, but Capital Carousels is confident we can make up for it while you are on the dance floor. Come enjoy the company and the exercise you get dancing at Capital Carousels!

Dance Programs Now Available

Originally posted by Donna Stewart  January/05/2016 08:35PM

The new year is here and our Winter Session is set to startup next week! Can’t wait to see everyone and get back on the dance floor! Pat has released the programs for next week and are now available on our website. The website updates I send out will be different from what you are used to. I will no longer be providing direct links to the newest updated material because navigating our site is easier now than ever before! Our dance programs can be found under the Dance Season page at the top of every page. As you hover your mouse over the Dance Season link, the links inside that page will also appear (including Dance Programs). Click on that and it will take you to that page. Also the programs and flyers will all be specific files (PDF files) which can be printed off directly. No more jumping through hoops to get to that file. I think you are going to like that for sure!
With the new year comes the new winter session. Gavin will be on hand to sign you up for either our Winter Session fee or you can pay as you go. Our winter session fee is unchanged from the fall fee of $168/couple or $84/single. That works out to $7/person/dance. If you want to pay as you go the fee is unchanged at $10/person. We of course are happy to see you in whatever capacity you choose.
A tidbit of news for those of you unaware. The WOW Weekend in London has a change of host hotel this year. As many of you may know, the Airport Inn and Suites, their host hotel for many years were bought out by another hotel chain. With this change came an increase in room charges and so the WOW committee has negotiated with Fanshaw College for use of their rooms. The flyer on our website here, reflects the changes in the host hotel information. If you have any questions regarding the WOW Weekend or the accommodation, please contact Jerry Callen or Bob Beck. Their contact information is on the flyer.
How are things going for you so far with our new website? I have been getting some positive responses regarding the new design and ease of use. For anyone who may be trying to email me through the “Contact Me” link at the bottom of Home Page, we have been having some issues with that and Arlo is working with the web hosts to resolve this. In the meantime, if you wish to contact me, please feel free to reply to this email and I will get back to you.
Well that is about all I have for now. All that is left is the dancing! Have dance shoes-will travel! See you next week!
